A list of the Shops and Services available to visitors to the Hokianga (See also “Travellers Tips” for general advice to make your visit more enjoyable).

Note: At the moment the only ATMS in the Hokianga are at the Service Station at Omapere, accessible from 7 am to 7 pm when the Station is open. Also the Four Square store at Rawene.

We suggest that you bring some cash with you.

Hokianga Ferry:

The Vehicle Ferry, Kohu Ra Tuarua’, operates a regular service across the Harbour from Rawene to The Narrows, about 3 Km from Kohukohu.

Tickets are purchased on board the Ferry. Payment may be either by cash or by using the on-board ATM machine which accepts EFTPOS cards and VISA and MASTERCARD credit cards.The machine does not dispense cash. There is currently an early ferry leaving The Narrows (Kohukohu) at 7.00am week days.

Medical Services:

Doctors and medical services throughout the Hokianga are based at the hospital at Rawene, but there are clinics in most of the bigger towns around the Hokianga.

For doctors, hospital appointments, or appointments at any of the clinics, telephone 09 405 7709. For emergencies ring 111.

There is also a medical Centre in Kaikohe, the Broadway Health Centre, telephone 09 401 2473.

The Health scheme and the Emergency Services around the Hokianga are rather special.

Chemists – Pharmacies:

In New Zealand prescription medicines are dispensed by Chemists at a Pharmacy. You will have to pay for some prescriptions. The Pharmacy also sells healthcare products, personal medical requirements and first aid supplies.
